When a Player Mentions PTSD: Respond Without Becoming Their Therapist

Gaming & PTSD Support · Firebreak Command editorial

A practical editorial guide to respectful replies, privacy, and appropriate care boundaries.

Acknowledge without investigating

If someone mentions PTSD during a gaming discussion, the next reply does not need to become an interview. Acknowledge what they chose to share and ask what kind of response they want, if any. Avoid requesting incident details, comparing suffering, or asking whether a diagnosis is official. Trauma details are not required in a Firebreak Command conversation. A member might want a change of subject, a quieter exchange, or no follow-up at all. Respecting that preference matters more than producing an impressive or deeply personal response.

Do not turn play into an intervention

Members should not prescribe repeated exposure to game content, pressure someone to keep playing through distress, or interpret a reaction as evidence of progress. Those suggestions cross from friendly conversation into unsupported clinical advice. Gaming is not a validated PTSD treatment. The VA describes treatment decisions as something people make with their health care providers, considering options and preferences. A community can maintain ordinary conduct rules and offer room to step away without presenting those choices as therapy or claiming that a particular response will improve symptoms.

Offer resources without taking control

If someone wants help finding treatment information, point them toward qualified care, such as a licensed mental health professional or an appropriate health service. Do not ask them to report back, disclose appointments, or demonstrate improvement to remain welcome. Before moving a conversation into private messages, ask permission; privacy should not become an excuse for amateur counseling. Moderators can remove harassment or unwanted probing while avoiding public judgments about a member's health. The goal is a respectful gaming space with visible limits, not an unofficial clinic operating through comments.

Bring it to your crew

How can a moderator acknowledge a disclosure while giving the member control over whether the conversation continues?
